Chiropractic Treatments for Children
Chiropractic treatments for children are safe and effective, and while the common belief is that chiropractic care is only meant to treat chronic pain, it is also quite effective in treating and or managing various childhood ailments. Chiropractic treatments are modified to meet the delicate needs of children, and every child is accurately assessed before treatment and or management begins.
Is My Child a Candidate for Chiropractic Treatment?
Children can be subject to spine issues starting in early development, and there are even instances when these issues can begin in-utero. Certain foetal positions can cause difficult labour, especially if the foetus is in a breech or transverse position. These positions can actually cause spinal segments to become pushed out of the proper position, which can result in stress on the spine and nervous system, and complicate common newborn ailments that include colic and reflux.
While some parents choose to have their newborn’s spine examined immediately after birth, other parents may bring their child in to see the chiropractor if they start to complain about physical pain when carrying heavy backpacks to and from school or when participating in physical activities and sports games. It is always a good idea for parents to have their child’s spine monitored as they develop, as even a simple playground injury can affect a child’s development.
Adjustments for Children
Chiropractic treatments are specifically tailored to meet a child’s needs, and these treatments do not include certain thrusting techniques that are often used on adults. When a child comes into the clinic for an initial consultation, the chiropractor will thoroughly assess their medical history and complete a full physical exam in order to determine the source of pain and cause of recurring issues like asthma or ear infections.
If they determine that spinal adjustments are the proper course of treatment, the adjustments will consist of extremely light fingertip pressure that will gently provide mobility and un-pop any joints that may be locking. The chiropractor may also use an instrument called an Activator, which works by providing light pressure to the spine in a more consistent fashion. Unless the child is injured due to an accident, chiropractic treatments for children are generally painless. Since the child is still developing, their spines heal a lot faster than adults, meaning they will be feeling much better after just a few minor treatments.
